Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics

Organization: Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (TIFR) & Indian Statistical Institute

Program Overview

A national-level exam that selects and trains Indian students for the International Mathematical Olympiad.

The Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics (IOQM) is the first stage of the Indian Mathematical Olympiad program, which ultimately selects students to represent India at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). It is coordinated by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE, TIFR) in collaboration with the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) and the Mathematics Teachers’ Association (India). IOQM is typically a national written examination testing problem-solving skills in algebra, number theory, combinatorics, and geometry. IOQM is open to pre-university students in India who meet age and educational eligibility criteria (usually secondary and higher secondary students). High performers in IOQM qualify for subsequent stages such as the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO) and further training camps. Participation develops deep mathematical thinking, exposure to challenging problems, and can significantly strengthen a student’s academic profile for competitive university admissions.
