What Is Morehead-Cain Scholarship?
Morehead-Cain is a merit scholarship and leadership-development program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, not a short high-school extracurricular. Selected scholars receive four fully funded undergraduate years and four funded summer experiences. Support includes tuition, books, room and board and/or a semester stipend, experienced advisers, an optional gap year, study-abroad opportunities, Discovery funds, and Summer Enrichment in Outdoor Leadership, Civic Collaboration, Global Perspective, and Professional Experience.
First-year candidates must be on track to graduate high school in spring, be competitive for UNC-Chapel Hill, and enter through an eligible nomination route. North Carolina students may self-nominate. Other U.S. and international candidates normally need nomination from an approved school or affiliate, although exceptional Early Action applicants outside North Carolina may be referred through UNC Admissions. Selection examines leadership, character, scholarship, and physical vigor and requires a counselor school report, one recommendation, senior-course information, essays, and a separate UNC application. The scholarship is test-optional for 2026-27.
