What Is Jefferson and Walentas Scholarships?
The Jefferson Scholars Foundation offers two nomination-only merit scholarships for students in their current graduating class. Both seek outstanding potential in leadership, scholarship, and engaged citizenship and are intended to cover the full cost of eight semesters at the University of Virginia—tuition, room, board, books, and miscellaneous expenses—plus enrichment. Current published values exceed $42,000 per year for Virginians and $83,000 per year for non-Virginians. The Walentas Scholarship adds a first-generation eligibility rule.
Students cannot apply directly. An eligible school selects a nominee; counselor and student materials are both due December 1, 2026. Regional committees review files and may invite January interviews, followed by virtual finalist interviews in late February. Nominees must separately apply to and be admitted by UVA; the scholarship cannot be used elsewhere. Financial need, citizenship, and prior UVA interest are not selection criteria, and test scores are not considered in the 2026-27 scholarship process.
