What Is MTNA Student Competitions?
MTNA runs age-based composition and performance competitions rather than one grades 9-12 contest. The high-school-relevant divisions are Junior (age 11-14 on January 1, 2027) and Senior (15-18), with piano duet spanning 11-18 when one partner is 15-18. Standard performance/composition categories progress from state to online video division to in-person national finals; Senior Brass and Voice instead use a nationwide video preliminary and live final.
For high-school-relevant new entry, Senior Brass and Voice open November 1 and close December 2,2026 at 3 p.m. Eastern (20:00 UTC). Composition, piano, duet, strings and woodwind entry closed September 9 at 3 p.m. Eastern (19:00 UTC). Adult categories and December 2 division videos for advancing entrants are separate routes; the December 2 date does not reopen closed categories.
