What Is National German Exam (NGE)?
The American Association of Teachers of German's National German Exam is an annual online, proctored assessment of the listening and reading students typically develop in German classes. More than 15,000 high-school students participate each year. It is a diagnostic achievement exam—not a general proficiency certification—and returns individual feedback to students and program-level information to teachers.
All four levels share a 100-question format: 50 listening/viewing questions in 40 minutes and 50 reading questions in 40 minutes, plus a five-minute student questionnaire. Level 1 targets ACTFL Novice Low-Mid, Level 2 Novice Mid, Level 3 Novice High-Intermediate Low, and Level 4 Intermediate Low-Mid. Students take the exam on Lingco with an eligible adult proctor; a parent or guardian cannot proctor.
