What Is NWEA Data Science for Everyone Competition?

NWEA launched the Data Science for Everyone (DS4E) Competition in 2023 to introduce a more diverse group of high-school students to data science. Teams used a subset of the Programme for International Student Assessment dataset and built machine-learning models to predict students' mathematics scores from demographic and psychological variables. The competition ran on Kaggle, and participants could interact with NWEA research scientists while learning about data science and education research.

The documented event was limited to U.S.-resident high-school students age 13 or older. Teams could contain up to five students, with an optional teacher or counselor advisor outside that limit. Each student could belong to only one team and needed one Kaggle account; minors required parental or guardian consent. Teams could submit up to five entries per day, could not privately share code or competition data outside the team, and winning teams had to provide their final model code and prize documents.
