What Is Sphinx Performance Academy?
SPA is a selective, full-scholarship residential summer intensive for violin, viola, cello, and double-bass musicians ages 11-17. Students study chamber-orchestra and solo repertoire through private lessons, masterclasses, recitals, career-enrichment sessions, and mentorship. Sphinx's mission materials describe the academy as training for emerging Black and Latinx classical musicians and as part of its education-and-access pipeline; the complete Summer 2027 eligibility form is not yet public, so applicants should verify how that focus is implemented in the next cycle.
Every accepted applicant receives a full scholarship covering the program, room, and board. Families remain responsible for transportation to and from the site, while Sphinx provides airport ground transportation for students flying without an adult parent or guardian. The completed 2026 sessions were at Boston Conservatory at Berklee and the University of Colorado Boulder. Applications are processed through Acceptd. Sphinx says the 2027 application will reopen in fall, but exact dates, sites, audition materials, and deadline are not yet posted.
