What Is Stulberg International String Competition?
The Stulberg Competition is an international classical string competition for exceptional violin, viola, cello, and double-bass students. It is age-based rather than high-school-grade-based: in 2026, entrants had to be age 19 or younger on January 1, and an 11-year-old reached the semifinals. Twelve semifinalists were selected by blind audition video and invited to Kalamazoo, where they performed required Bach and standard concerto repertoire before judges and a live audience; six advanced to the evening final.
The current application page says 2027 guidelines are coming soon. It lists a $150 application fee and requires an online form and anonymous accompanied audition video recorded within 12 months, using orchestral solo repertoire and no more than 20 minutes. Any name or identifying information in the video causes automatic disqualification. The final 2027 deadline, age cutoff, competition date, repertoire, judges, and prizes are not yet published.
