What Is Tanglewood Institute Young Artists Orchestra?
The Young Artists Orchestra is operated by Boston University Tanglewood Institute (BUTI), not directly by the Boston Symphony Orchestra. High-school musicians ages 14-19 who have not begun full-time college or conservatory live and study at Tanglewood for six intensive weeks. The 2026 program ran July 5-August 15 and included daily orchestral rehearsals, three Ozawa Hall performances, Tanglewood on Parade, private lessons, chamber music three times weekly, master classes, extensive BSO and Tanglewood Music Center concert access, and six transferable BU course credits.
Admission requires an online application, instrument-specific live or unedited recorded audition, personal statements, a recommendation and an $80 fee. The 2026 regular deadline was January 21 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern and was extended to January 25; later files were considered only if space remained.
