What Is Tennessee Governor's School for the Arts?
GSFTA is a three-week residential pre-professional arts intensive at Middle Tennessee State University for talented Tennessee students who are in grades 10 or 11 when applying and will be rising juniors or seniors. Concentrations are Dance, Filmmaking, Instrumental Music, Vocal Music, Theatre, and Visual Art. Students spend about four hours a day, six days a week in their major area and participate in classes, rehearsals, productions, performances, exhibitions, and interdisciplinary activities throughout the session, including weekends.
The 2026 program ran June 7-29. Dance, Theatre, and Visual Arts applications closed December 5, 2025; Film and Music closed January 16, 2026. Complete applications included a student form, parent releases, current transcript, two teacher recommendations—one from the arts field—and a counselor achievement form. Every on-time applicant received an audition or portfolio review; Dance and Theatre auditioned in person, while Film, Music, and Visual Arts used submitted work under discipline instructions.
