# University of Minnesota Talented Youth Mathematics Program (UMTYMP) UMTYMP is a renowned accelerated mathematics program for Minnesota's most talented middle and high school students, run by the University of Minnesota's MathCEP for forty years. Students enter through the UMTYMP Algebra Qualifying Exam, offered each spring to students currently in grades 5-7, then progress through up to five years of coursework that fulfills high school math requirements and culminates in University of Minnesota calculus courses worth up to 12 college credits. ## What You'll Do - Take the Algebra Qualifying Exam in spring (grades 5-7; roughly 900 students test each year for about 200 seats statewide) - Progress through an accelerated five-year sequence from algebra through multivariable calculus - Attend courses on the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus (with sites in Duluth and Rochester, and online sections for greater Minnesota) - Earn up to 12 University of Minnesota credits in calculus - Write thoughtful application essays as part of holistic admissions — there is no set passing exam score ## Who Should Apply Minnesota students in grades 5-7 who are exceptionally strong in mathematics and ready for a multi-year commitment. Tuition is approximately $1,850 per year for the high school component and $1,990 per year for the calculus component, including textbooks; scholarships are available. ## Outcomes Students complete high school mathematics years early, earn substantial University of Minnesota credit, and join an alumni community of mathematicians, scientists, and engineers.
