What Is Shell Eco-marathon (global competition family)?
Shell Eco-marathon is an active global academic engineering-program family in which institution-sponsored student teams design, build, document, and test energy-efficient vehicles. The 2026 season comprised regional Mileage Challenges, Off-Track Awards, and an Autonomous Driving Competition; results can qualify institutions for an invitational Global Championship in Qatar in 2027. Eligible teams must be endorsed by a university, college, qualifying secondary school, or qualifying vocational or professional institution. Participants normally must be at least 16 on the first event day, although ages 14–15 may be approved in advance with additional safety and supervision plans. Registration itself is free, but teams fund their vehicle, materials, travel, lodging, food, and related expenses. Registration is event-specific and has technical and logistics phases rather than one global deadline. The 2026 schedule included Qatar, the United States, Poland, and Brazil. As of August 20, the final listed 2026 event was Brazil on August 25–27; competitor registration phases were already closed.
