What Is UPMC Hillman Cancer Center Academy?
Hillman Academy is a free, full-time summer research program connecting high-school students with faculty, staff, or trainee mentors across nine UPMC and University of Pittsburgh biomedical and computational research sites. Students perform a defined project, attend program and professional-development activities, and communicate their research at the end of the summer. Site choices include CompBio, CoSBBI, Surgery, Cancer Biology, TDX, Pathobiology, ICI, VISION, and WCRC; age rules, project methods, location, schedule, and modality differ by site.
The completed 2026 program ran June 15-July 31 for seven to eight weeks, generally Monday-Friday and 30-35 hours per week. Most placements were in person in Pittsburgh. A small number of computational internships were remote, while CoSBBI offered in-person, hybrid, and remote arrangements. The first and final program weeks were mandatory, and students could not hold a job or attend another program that interfered with the Academy. Hillman offered no housing; students arranged their own living situation, transportation, and ordinary lunches.
