What Is UMKC STAHR High School Scholars?

STAHR is a free, yearlong health-professions pipeline for current high-school sophomores and juniors who are U.S. citizens/permanent residents, have at least a 3.0 GPA and meet federal economic- or educational-disadvantage criteria. The 2026 program began with six in-person weeks at UMKC's Health Sciences Campus, Monday-Friday for about 30 hours weekly, then continued with academic-year support through April. Students observe medical, dental and/or pharmacy professionals, conduct faculty-mentored health research, serve the Kansas City community, develop professional skills and work with UMKC admissions staff.

Housing is not provided; students must arrange daily transportation and, if needed, Kansas City lodging. Federal grant rules exclude students whose intended health profession is nursing. Participation is free, and students meeting expectations receive stipend and/or scholarship support. Some UMKC professional-program applicants later receive a conditional automatic interview or special consideration, but only after meeting that program's minimum requirements. The completed 2026 application closed February 1 and the next cycle is not announced.
