What Is Virginia Junior Academy of Science Research?
VJAS is a statewide, juried research community for Virginia residents in grades 7-12. Students develop an original STEM question, design and carry out research, write a formal scientific paper, and submit it through a school sponsor or eligible individual/home-school membership. Expert readers evaluate the paper for scientific quality, safety, format, and originality; selected students give oral presentations at the annual symposium, while non-selected submitters may still attend, learn from peers, and receive feedback.
The 2026-27 cycle is underway: research funding applications are due November 1, 2026, papers and optional officer/award/scholarship applications are due February 21, 2027, edits close March 3, and the symposium is May 22 at Potomac Shores Middle School in Prince William County. The paper fee is $35 per student. Exact cutoff times and host food or attendance costs are not yet published.
