What Is Best Buddies High Schools Friendship Program?
Best Buddies High Schools fosters mutual one-to-one friendships between students with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities. It should not be framed as a non-disabled student mentoring or helping a passive recipient. Participants are peers matched by location and shared interests, with Best Buddies staff and chapter leaders monitoring the quality of the relationship.
Matches are intended to last at least one year and usually begin near the start of the school year. Buddy pairs communicate at least weekly by in-person contact, phone, text, email, social media, or written correspondence and are encouraged to meet in person twice each month. School chapters also organize at least four group activities during the year. Membership, training, consent, matching, and school deadlines are set locally.
