What Is American Red Cross Disaster Action Team?
American Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers respond to local emergencies such as home fires, floods and storms. Depending on the assignment, they may help affected families obtain immediate relief, emotional support, shelter and recovery resources, or serve remotely as on-call Duty Officers coordinating responders and community partners.
The core disaster-response pathway is not open to every high-school junior or senior. Current national and regional Red Cross pages require Disaster Action Team and disaster-services responders to be at least 18. Applicants create a Volunteer Connection profile, apply for locally available roles, complete a background check and required training, and speak with volunteer staff about fit and next steps. Some field assignments also require reliable transportation and comfort working in stressful or physically difficult conditions.
