What Is Crisis Text Line Volunteer Crisis Counselor?

Crisis Text Line recruits adult volunteers in the United States to support people in crisis through its secure text platform. This is not a high-school-specific program: accepted applicants must be at least 18 years old, so the legacy title was materially misleading. Applications are rolling, new cohorts begin weekly, and space is limited.

The application takes about 20 minutes. Accepted applicants complete a free, self-paced, web-based mental-health training organized as a two-week cohort and estimated at 15 hours. Modules, quizzes, role plays, and observation shifts cover active listening, reflection, self-harm, suicide, depression, bullying, LGBTQ+ issues, collaborative problem solving, and safety planning, with support from a Learning Specialist. A background check is part of training.
