What Is Washington State Legislative Youth Advisory?
Washington LYAC is the official youth advisory body to the state Legislature, youth-led under oversight of the Lieutenant Governor's office. Selected students serve two-year terms representing youth priorities through policy research and recommendations, legislative meetings, testimony, bill development, agency/community partnerships, surveys, public events and media work. The council meets frequently in committees, monthly as a full body and up to six times in person each year.
The completed Y28 application was open to current grades 7-10 who both reside and attend school in Washington, with parent/guardian consent. A recommendation from a teacher, counselor or community leader was optional but strongly encouraged. Applications closed April 30, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific. The council describes appointed members as ages 14-18, but it does not publish an applicant-age cutoff separate from the grade rule. No next-cycle date or complete cost/reimbursement policy is posted.
