What Is NMNH Summer High School Internship Program?
This is the current Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History program that succeeded the former Youth Engagement through Science (YES!) Teen Internship. It is broader than the legacy description: placements span science and non-science museum work, with 2026 projects in exhibits/communications, botany, anthropology, paleobiology, and science education. Interns worked in person for eight weeks, Tuesday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., splitting 24 weekly hours between mentored department projects and enrichment such as field trips, behind-the-scenes tours, public engagement, and job preparation. The 2026 award was $5,600 ($700 per week), with lunch, field-trip transportation, and SmarTrip support if needed. Eligible applicants were current grades 9-12, ages 15-18, fluent in English, legally eligible as U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and within commuting distance of Washington, DC from DC, Maryland, or Virginia. The SOLAA application required a resume, four 250-word interest responses, and one non-family recommendation. Applications closed March 20, 2026; no 2027 timeline is published.
