# Summer Field School in Archaeology The College of New Jersey's Department of Sociology and Anthropology runs an annual summer field school at the William Green Plantation, an eighteenth-century site on the college's own campus. Unusually for a university field school, it accepts high school students: the roster spans "students of all ages, from high school (rising juniors and seniors) to graduate school," all working the same trenches under Dr. George Leader. Classes meet Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., over roughly two weeks. ## What You'll Do - Spend the first two days in classroom sessions on the William Green Plantation Project and on artifact analysis - Learn and practice survey, mapping, field walking, archaeological photography, and excavation - Handle post-excavation work: cleaning, cataloguing, analysis, and curation of artifacts - Work directly with faculty and graduate students on an ongoing research excavation - Choose participation with or without college credit ## Who Should Apply Rising high school juniors and seniors who want authentic fieldwork rather than a simulated dig, and who can commit to six-day weeks outdoors. No previous archaeology coursework is expected.
