What Is Aerial Drone Competition - Mission 2027: Fast?
The Robotics Education & Competition Foundation's current Aerial Drone Competition season is Mission 2027: Fast Track. Registration opened in June 2026, official rules released August 11, and local qualifying events begin October 1 and continue through spring 2027. Teams compete in solo piloting, student-programmed autonomous flight, alliance teamwork, and a judged communications interview covering their drone, programming, process, and competition notebook. There is no minimum age; RECF recommends ages 10-18 and uses 12U, 15U, and 19U divisions. A 19U competitor must be 19 or younger on May 6, 2027 and must not have graduated secondary school. Teams of 3-5 are recommended and typically practice 2-4 hours per week. The required RECF season fee is $200 per team. Each local qualifier usually costs another $50-$100, championship fees are higher, and teams must obtain an approved drone, controller, programming computer, batteries/spares, and practice materials. Qualifying awards can advance a team to its regional championship and, under 2027 criteria, the RECF World Championship in St. Louis.
