What Is Argonne High School Autonomous Vehicle?
Argonne National Laboratory's AVC is a school-sponsored engineering challenge in which students follow a professional design cycle: propose and budget a project, build and program a miniature autonomous vehicle, document progress, present the design, and send the vehicle through a maze-like obstacle course revealed at the in-person competition. Judges evaluate engineering process, vehicle design, performance with minimal human intervention, and written and oral communication.
For 2026, each school could enter one team of four to six students in grades 9-12, coached by a teacher or school administrator. Teams were selected first come, first served. Registration closed Friday, January 9, 2026; Argonne did not publish an exact cutoff time. The official page initially described an April event with date and venue to be determined, and a participating public school later reported a 2026 result, confirming that the competition occurred. That cycle is closed even though Argonne's page still contains stale “registration open” wording and the old form link.
