What Is American Legion National High School?
The American Legion Oratorical Contest challenges eligible students under twenty to present an eight-to-ten-minute constitutional oration and a three-to-five-minute assigned-topic speech. Entry begins locally and advances through a single Legion department. Only the three national finalists are barred from competing again.
National finalist scholarships are $25,000, $22,500 and $20,000. Certified department winners participating nationally receive $2,000, with a further $2,000 for first-round winners who do not reach the finals. The Legion covers national travel and lodging for qualified contestants and an adult chaperone. Local deadlines and any local costs vary; the completed 2026 finals were at Hillsdale College.
