What Is Ashoka Young Changemakers?
Ashoka Young Changemakers is not a generic leadership course for all high-school students. Candidates must be under 20 and already have an original, empathy-based response to a social problem, have built a team and enabled others to lead, and have produced real positive impact. Ashoka currently lists recruitment in Nigeria, Brazil, India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and the United States, and candidates may apply only in their country of residence.
Self-nominations and nominations by others are accepted year-round, but a nomination is only an expression of interest. Each country team runs a separate application cycle. Selection can include online screening, national and international review, conversations with several social entrepreneurs or young changemakers, and an in-person panel attended with a team member and adult ally. Ashoka says applying and participating are free and that invited panel candidates can receive travel, accommodation, and food reimbursement.
