What Is Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence?

The Goldwater Scholarship is a federally endowed national award for college sophomores and juniors, not a high-school extracurricular or preliminary recognition. It supports undergraduates who show strong academic performance and research experience and intend to become research leaders in eligible natural sciences, mathematics, engineering, computer and information sciences, geosciences, life sciences, materials, physics and astronomy, or qualifying psychology fields. Students pursuing medical or veterinary paths qualify only when research is central to their career goals.

Students cannot apply directly. An accredited U.S. two- or four-year institution with a designated Goldwater Campus Representative conducts its own internal process and submits nominations. A school generally may nominate four students, with additional slots when transfer-student or U.S.-veteran nominees are included. Internal campus deadlines occur between early September and late January and are usually earlier than the national cutoff.
