What Is Bennington Young Writers Awards?

Part of Bennington College's Young Creators Awards, this free worldwide competition recognizes current grade 9-12 writers in fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Entrants choose one category and submit original English-language work: one story/excerpt, one personal or creative nonfiction essay/excerpt, or 1-3 poems. The full submission must be typed, display the author's name on every page, and stay within a strict 1,500-word total including titles, headers, footers, and citations.

Every entry must be reviewed and approved by a teacher or mentor who has previously worked with the student; homeschooled entrants use a non-parent mentor. Students in grade 12 first complete a nonbinding, no-fee Common or Coalition Application path to receive award-submission instructions. Current high-school students worldwide may enter, but graduates, college students, gap-year students, and transfer students may not.
