What Is By the People?
By the People is the Library of Congress's active online crowdsourcing project for improving access to digitized historical collections. Anyone can select a page and transcribe its text without registering. A free registered account is required to review another person's submission and also enables tagging, OCR tools, a contribution profile, and downloadable activity records. A second volunteer reviews each submitted page; a volunteer cannot review their own work. Completed transcriptions are returned to loc.gov, improving full-text search, readability, and access for people who use assistive technology.
This is self-directed public-service participation, not a selective internship, course, or student-only program. The Library publishes no minimum age, grade, citizenship, residence, nomination, interview, recommendation, application cycle, deadline, fixed schedule, or minimum-hour commitment. Current campaigns span numerous Library collections, and participation can begin whenever pages are available.
