What Is National Archives Citizen Archivist?
Citizen Archivist is the U.S. National Archives' open crowdsourcing program for improving the searchability, readability, and discoverability of digitized federal records. Volunteers work entirely online: they transcribe historical documents, tag records and photographs with useful keywords, and add contextual comments that share relevant knowledge. Contributors can choose a current topical mission or search the National Archives Catalog for a record that interests them.
Participation is unpaid, free, self-paced, and open worldwide, including to non-U.S. citizens. The Archives says Citizen Archivists can be any age and students are welcome, but a minor and guardian should still verify current Login.gov, account, privacy, and school requirements. A contributor needs a free National Archives Catalog account authenticated through Login.gov and must follow the Citizen Contribution Policy. Creating an account also subscribes the user to the Catalog Newsletter, which can be unsubscribed.
