What Is Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist?
The 3M Young Scientist Challenge is a national middle-school science competition, not a high-school opportunity. Legal U.S. residents enrolled in grades 5-8 submit an individual 1-2 minute video explaining an original innovation or solution to an everyday problem. Parent or guardian consent and portal registration are required.
The 2026 entry period closed April 30, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. ET. Finalists and state merit winners have been announced, and the ten finalists are working with 3M scientist mentors to develop prototypes for an anticipated October 2026 final event. A 2027 cycle was not announced on the official pages.
