Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge
Organization: Discovery Education & 3M
Program Overview
A national science competition where U.S. middle school students pitch innovation ideas for a chance to be named America’s Top Young Scientist.
The **Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge** is a national science competition that invites U.S. students in grades 5–8 to identify a real-world problem and propose an innovative solution. Participants submit a short video (typically up to 2 minutes) explaining the science behind their idea, how it works, and why it matters. From these submissions, finalists are selected to work with 3M scientist mentors to refine their ideas over the summer and then present them at the final event, where they compete for the title of **America’s Top Young Scientist**, cash awards, and other prizes. The challenge helps students build skills in scientific thinking, problem-solving, communication, and innovation, and offers early exposure to real-world STEM careers through mentorship. *Note: This program is specifically for middle school students; high school students are not eligible to compete.*
