What Is NSBE Jr.?
NSBE Jr. is the National Society of Black Engineers' pre-college membership and chapter network. Although one marketing page says K-12, NSBE's March 2026 constitution defines an NSBE Jr. member as a student in grades 3-12 who pays annual dues. Students can affiliate with a local school or community chapter or join At-Large when no chapter is available; At-Large members receive the same national benefits.
Local experience varies. Chapters may run engineering design, robotics, math, college-readiness, tutoring, mentoring, leadership and community activities, while national and regional programs include optional competitions, conferences, scholarships and awards with their own grade ranges, team rules, deadlines and fees. Membership does not automatically supply every program, a personal Black-engineer mentor, a convention place, scholarship, leadership title or competition credential.
