What Is HMI Summer Term?
High Mountain Institute's Summer Term is a four-week residential program for rising 10th, 11th, and 12th graders ages 14-18, based at HMI's Leadville, Colorado campus. Students combine cabin living and seminar-style writing workshops or ecology research with rock climbing, whitewater rafting, and two extended backpacking expeditions. No prior outdoor experience is required, but the program includes about 18 backcountry days at altitude and families should evaluate the published limits on mental-health and outside support.
The completed 2026 term ran June 28-July 25 and cost $9,900, plus a refundable-if-unused $500 student-account deposit; flights were not included. Need-based aid reached about 40% of participants, with an average award equal to 70% of tuition, and the largest packages could include gear and flights. For 2027, HMI says the application will open in September, but it has not posted an exact opening day, deadline, session dates, tuition, or aid terms. The current central admissions page requires two short essays, a transcript, two teacher recommendations, and an interview; an older program page conflicts on timing and recommendation count, so its January 15 date must not be treated as confirmed for 2027.
