ICAS Mathematics Competition

Organization: Janison (formerly UNSW Global)

Program Overview

An international school-based mathematics competition assessing problem-solving and reasoning for students in Years 2–12.

ICAS – Mathematics is an international, school-based competition that assesses students’ mathematical skills in areas such as number, algebra, measurement, geometry, statistics and probability. It is designed as a multiple-choice and short‑answer test focused on higher‑order thinking, logical reasoning and problem-solving rather than rote calculation. The assessment is administered under exam conditions at participating schools and is available in English. Students from primary through upper secondary levels (typically Years 2–12, including high school grades 9–12) can participate, with questions tailored to year level. ICAS is widely used in Australia, New Zealand and a growing number of countries to benchmark student performance internationally. Participants receive detailed feedback reports, and high achievers may earn certificates of Merit, Credit, Distinction or High Distinction, as well as medals in some regions. The competition helps motivated students extend their mathematical thinking, prepare for more advanced contests, and build a strong academic profile for future study.
