What Is U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad to IChO Team?
The American Chemical Society's U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad is the official multi-stage pathway to the four-member U.S. International Chemistry Olympiad team. A parent or guardian registers the student through the ACS system and works with the local USNCO coordinator. Students first take an in-person local multiple-choice exam; local nominees advance to a three-part national exam with multiple-choice, written, and laboratory sections. More than 1,000 students take the National Exam, the top 20 attend a two-week residential study camp, and four are selected for IChO.
ACS currently tells families seeking 2027 registration to contact their coordinator, but has not published exact 2027 dates, the IChO location, or one universal fee. The latest official calendar is the completed 2026 cycle, which ran local exams February 27-March 16, National Exams April 10-19, camp May 31-June 13, and IChO July 10-19.
