# IEEE TryEngineering Summer Institute The TryEngineering Summer Institute is run by IEEE, the world's largest technical professional organization, as its flagship pre-college summer program. High school students live on a university campus for roughly nine days and sample multiple engineering disciplines through hands-on projects taught in university classrooms. For 2026 the Institute expanded to nine US locations - including Rice University, Columbia University, the University of Pennsylvania, and UCLA - plus a first international site at Oxford. ## What You'll Do - Build real engineering projects spanning robotics, aerospace, AI, and electrical and mechanical design - Attend classes in university classrooms taught through IEEE's TryEngineering curriculum - Take field trips to engineering sites - the Rice session, for example, visits NASA Johnson Space Center and Rice's George R. Brown School of Engineering - Live in supervised campus dorms and eat in campus dining halls with students from around the country - Hear from practicing engineers and IEEE professionals about engineering career paths ## Who Should Apply High school students exploring engineering before college. Enrollment is first-come, first-served by session with no admissions essays; US session tuition starts at $4,195 (Rice, 2026) and covers housing, meals, materials, trips, and activities. A scholarship program offers need-based support. ## Outcomes Students leave with a multi-discipline sampler of engineering fields, a completed team design portfolio, and early exposure to the professional society many will later join as engineering undergraduates.
