What Is International Johannes Brahms Competition?
The International Johannes Brahms Competition is a public-scoring classical performance competition in Pörtschach am Wörthersee, Austria. Its discipline rotates: the upcoming September 27-October 4, 2026 edition is exclusively for art-song duos of voice and piano, while the September 26-October 3, 2027 edition is announced for violin. Piano and cello follow in 2028. It is therefore inaccurate to present every year's opportunity as a simultaneous piano, strings, voice and chamber-music youth contest.
The 2026 duo application closed August 15. There is no age or nationality restriction, so an exceptionally advanced high-school musician can technically participate, but the organizer requires proof of a very high, internationally competitive artistic level. A vocalist must apply with a pianist as a duo. Three live rounds use Brahms-centered art-song repertoire and compulsory related works; six finalists perform before the final concert and public audience-prize process.
