What Is Perlman Music Program Summer Music School?
The Perlman Music Program's Summer Music School, known as the Littles program, brings 30-35 gifted violinists, violists, and cellists ages 12-18 from around the world to a seven-week residential conservatory community on Shelter Island, New York. Faculty led by Itzhak Perlman teach solo, chamber, orchestral, and choral repertoire in a deliberately small, noncompetitive setting.
Students receive two or three private lessons each week, attend weekly studio class, practice four hours on six days, rotate through three chamber-music groups, sing daily chorus, rehearse in the string orchestra, and may perform Works in Progress concerts with teacher approval. Physical-awareness instruction, recreation, excursions, and supervised dorm life complement the intensive curriculum. Students must remain for the full residency except in an emergency.
