# Bioethics for High School Students The Ethics Institute at Kent Place School is one of the few secondary-school ethics centers in the country, and its summer offerings are open to students from outside the school. "Bioethics for High School Students: Being Human in a Brave New World" is a week-long, discussion-driven intensive in which participants take up real medical scenarios and work them through the Institute's structured ethical decision-making method, guided by expert facilitators drawn from medicine, law, and related fields. ## What You'll Do - Learn a formal ethical decision-making framework and apply it to actual clinical cases - Debate questions about the value of life, human identity, and the ethics of emerging medical technologies - Work with visiting practitioners from medicine and law rather than only classroom teachers - Take part in a field trip built into the week, plus daily lunch and snacks - Practice the kind of stakeholder-mapping argument used in professional bioethics consultation ## Who Should Apply Rising 9th through 12th graders, from Kent Place and from other schools; the program is coed. Students considering medicine, law, public health, or philosophy get the most out of it, but no prior ethics coursework is assumed. ## Outcomes Participants finish able to structure and defend an ethical argument, with exposure to the professional field of bioethics and to the Institute's wider programming, including its ethics bowl and student research work.
