What Is Bioethics for High School Students: Being?
Being Human in a Brave New World is the Ethics Institute at Kent Place School's public, one-week high-school bioethics intensive. The completed 2026 course met in person in Summit, New Jersey, July 27-31 from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. It was open to rising ninth through twelfth graders from Kent Place and other schools and was coed. Those dates have passed, registration is closed, and no Summer 2027 dates, price, opening date, deadline, or enrollment policy is posted.
The course is interactive and discussion-driven. Students learn foundational bioethics principles and the Institute's Ethical Decision-Making Method, then apply them to real situations and cases. The sample week addressed medical professionalism; the value and beginning or end of life; autonomy; capacity, competence, and consent; paternalism and substituted judgment; religion; assisted reproduction, surrogacy, biological wills, and savior siblings; medical aid in dying; justice and scarce-resource allocation; beneficence and non-maleficence; bedside ethics; and medical humanities. The Institute cautions that the schedule can change.
