What Is Lemelson-MIT InvenTeams Grant Initiative?
InvenTeams is a selective school-team grant initiative, not an individual student competition. A high-school educator leads students and community mentors through identifying a meaningful local problem, researching users and prior solutions, designing a technological response, building and testing prototypes, gathering feedback, and presenting the work. Selected teams receive a project grant and sustained Lemelson-MIT support over an academic year.
The latest official cohort was 2025-26: eight U.S. high-school teams, each receiving $7,500 plus year-long support from Lemelson-MIT, Teaching Fellows, and other resources. Teams held community technical reviews, completed invention prototypes, participated in a May 19 virtual EurekaFest, and seven teams joined a May 28-30 MIT Open House with more than 75 students and educators. Participation did not guarantee a patent, and only some historical teams have later obtained one.
