What Is Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition?
The Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition is a professional-level international solo viola competition. The next edition is announced for January 16-22, 2028 at The Glasshouse International Centre for Music in Gateshead, United Kingdom. The official site now labels Tertis for violists age 18+; its paired Cecil Aronowitz International Viola Competition is the separate event for performers age 18 and under.
This is a major correction to the catalog: the Tertis competition is no longer based in Port Erin, Isle of Man, and it is not broadly a high-school competition. The 2025 return after a six-year hiatus admitted violists age 19-30, used multiple solo rounds and culminated in a final with Royal Northern Sinfonia.
