What Is Sorensen Institute High School Leaders Program?
The Sorensen Institute for Civic Leadership's High School Leaders Program (HSLP) is an intensive two-week residential civic-leadership program at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. The 2027 program runs July 10-24, and students must attend every class, presentation, workshop, lecture, and field trip. A typical cohort has about 32 students.
The curriculum has three modules: The Informed Leader on Virginia government and politics, The Thoughtful Leader on public-policy formation and debate, and The Active Leader on advocacy, civic engagement, collaboration across differing views, resumes, communication, and teamwork. Students attend lectures and discussions with leaders from Virginia's public, private, and nonprofit sectors, complete field trips, and develop and present a culminating group policy project. College-student program managers who are youth-leadership alumni live with and support the cohort.
