What Is LLCipher?
LLCipher is MIT Lincoln Laboratory's free one-week introduction to theoretical cryptography for high-school students interested in mathematics or cybersecurity. Technical staff teach students how secure encryption schemes and digital signatures are built, using ideas from abstract algebra, number theory and complexity theory. If time permits, the class also explores developments such as homomorphic encryption and multiparty computation. There are no official course prerequisites.
The 2026 workshop took place in person August 3-7 at MIT Beaver Works in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It was nonresidential, so students were responsible for housing and transportation. Eligibility was limited to U.S. citizens and permanent residents. Both the application and teacher recommendation were due April 15, 2026.
