What Is Changemakers in Computing (CiC)?
CiC is a free, in-person University of Washington summer program examining how computing intersects with society, justice, and changemaking. It is open to Washington residents enrolled in a Washington high school as current sophomores or juniors. No prior coding experience is expected. The program aims especially to increase participation by students who are economically disadvantaged and/or may be first in their families to attend college, but all eligible rising juniors and seniors may apply.
For 2026, mentees met on the Seattle campus Monday-Thursday for four weeks, roughly 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Days combined mentor-group check-ins, technical foundations and code-alongs, technology ethics and social responsibility, career and post-high-school exploration, project work, and community building. Every mentee received a USD 1,200 stipend, lunch, and all necessary materials. Housing and CiC-issued bus passes were not provided; students had to reach campus, with Washington's free youth-transit program as a possible option.
