What Is MIT PRIMES-USA?
PRIMES-USA pairs exceptionally advanced high-school mathematicians with graduate-student or faculty mentors from MIT and partner universities. Students work remotely on unsolved problems in pure mathematics or applied areas such as theoretical computer science and computational biology. Sophomores generally work in groups; juniors may pursue individual or group projects.
The 2027 PRIMES-USA research student application closes November 2, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. EST (November 3 at 04:59 UTC). Two or three recommendation letters are due November 6 at the same clock (November 7 at 04:59 UTC), which does not extend the student application. This non-local route serves US-resident sophomores and juniors outside Greater Boston. Living abroad while attending an online US school does not qualify. The Boston and PRIMES Circle branches have distinct audiences.
