What Is Whitehead Institute High School Internship?
Whitehead Institute launched a genuine high-school research internship in summer 2023. Six students in grades 10-12 from historically underrepresented groups worked directly with Whitehead members, postdoctoral researchers, and staff scientists on biomedical projects including RNA extraction and analysis, prostate-cancer cell-surface mass-spectrometry data, and cell-signaling experiments. The inaugural program was a six-week paid internship with transportation expenses included.
Whitehead's 2024 annual report says the Hamilos lab and Functional Genomics Platform hosted two high-school interns who completed summer research projects. However, the Institute currently publishes no standalone internship page, open application, 2025 or 2026 dates, pay rate, deadline, or current eligibility rules. Its publicly advertised 2026 Spring Lecture Series is a separate three-day, first-come program and must not be substituted for this internship.
