What Is National Science Bowl Middle School Division?
The U.S. Department of Energy's National Science Bowl is a nationwide school-team competition in which middle-school students answer rapid toss-up and bonus questions in science and mathematics. A team has four active students, one alternate and a school-approved coach, usually a teacher. Teams prepare through the fall, compete in their assigned regional event beginning in January and can advance to the National Finals by winning that regional.
The 2027 regional preregistration system opens October 5, 2026 at noon Eastern. A coach must preregister the school, wait for regional approval and submit Team 1 by November 23 at 11:59 p.m. in the school's local time to retain a reserved place. Every student needs an electronic parental consent and media release. Regional events can be virtual or in person, and the 2027 National Finals are April 29-May 3 in the Washington, D.C. area. DOE still links 2026 academic rules, so exact 2027 age cutoffs and any rule changes remain subject to the forthcoming rules.
