What Is Bay Area Mathematical Olympiad (BAMO)?
BAMO is an annual, four-hour proof-writing competition for school students. It offers BAMO-8 for grade 8 and below and BAMO-12 for grade 12 and below. Each paper contains five essay-proof problems worth seven points each. Full-time college students cannot enter, although a high-school student taking some college courses remains eligible.
Registration is institutional: a school, math circle, or comparable educational center registers and supplies an in-person proctor. Home-schooled students cannot test at home and must arrange an outside educational site. For 2026, testing was limited to California, Oregon, and Washington, with grading outside those states not guaranteed. The February 25 exam and March 8 awards ceremony are complete; more than 600 students participated. BAMO says registration for 2027 will begin in December, but it has not announced the exam date, cutoff, eligible geography, or fee.
