What Is National Young Composers Challenge?
The National Young Composers Challenge is a free U.S.-resident competition for composers ages 13–18. Each entrant may submit one original, solely composed work of no more than five minutes for either full orchestra or an approved chamber ensemble of two to six instruments. Submission requires online registration, an MP3, a PDF score, and four printed scores mailed by the October 1, 2026 postmark deadline.
Every entrant receives recorded judge comments. Judges select six winners—three orchestral and three chamber—for a professional performance at the spring 2027 Composium. Orchestral winners receive $1,000 and chamber winners $500, plus a professional recording. Winners must attend and pay their own travel and lodging, provide individual parts, and permit educational posting under the published rules. The Composium is only identified as April 2027, without an exact date.
