What Is Monterey Jazz Next Generation Jazz Orchestra?
NGJO is Monterey Jazz Festival's national all-star high-school jazz orchestra. The 2026 ensemble has 20 musicians—trumpets, trombones, saxophones, piano, guitar, bass, drums and voice—directed by Gerald Clayton. The group traditionally gathers for a summer rehearsal weekend, may tour, and culminates in major September performances at Monterey Jazz Festival with professional artists.
The 2026 roster is already final. Members appear in a September 25 student jam, with Rufus Reid on September 26, and with Ambrose Akinmusire, Gerald Clayton and the Next Generation Women in Jazz Combo on the Jimmy Lyons Stage September 27. Monterey's current page does not publish a 2027 audition opening, deadline, fee, required recordings or selection rubric.
