What Is OUDC Social Justice Fellowship?
Operation Understanding DC's Social Justice Fellowship is a tuition-free, year-long leadership program for high-school students in the Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia region. The 2026-2027 cohort accepts rising sophomores and juniors, with juniors receiving priority and sophomores considered case by case. About 24 Fellows meet biweekly with civil-rights leaders, organizers, artists, journalists, and public officials; attend retreats, workshops, and historical sites; and train in public speaking, writing, conflict resolution, facilitation, identity exploration, and bridge-building. A free two-week Summer Journey through the American South connects Civil Rights history with contemporary justice issues.
The current cohort begins in November 2026 and runs approximately November to November. Its application deadline was July 1, 2026, so the cycle is closed even though the website still displays an application link. Finalists interview in August. OUDC charges no participation fee, selects independently of financial status, and says it will work with students who need transportation support.
